I’ve maintained a plant-based diet for close to 30 years but occasionally I long for some of that comfort food I remember from my youth. Bangers and mash is one such meal. When I’ve needed a quick and easy dinner I’ve heated up some of the vegan sausages that have been available for awhile. They’re okay in a pinch, but they tend to be dry.
Well that has all changed. Beyond Meat, the company whose vegan burgers are cropping up everywhere to rave reviews now have a sausage option, and are they ever good! Although I’m not necessarily looking for food that tastes and looks like meat, these sausages might actually fool a confirmed meat eater. They sizzle on the pan, are full of flavour, they’re tender, very juicy and they smell wonderful while they’re cooking. With a side of mashed potatoes they satisfy my comfort food craving.
Many people are steering towards a plant-based diet for a number of good reasons. Just this week the UN came out with an urgent report stating that in order to combat climate change we have to scale way back on animal agriculture which has an extremely negative impact on the planet, (not to mention the impact on the animals.) Animal agriculture is the single greatest human-caused source of greenhouse gases, deforestation and freshwater pollution. It’s also a major contributor to air pollution, habitat loss, and a highly inefficient use of our natural resources.
The UN has called for a global shift to a plant-based diet wherever possible as the most effective way to fight not only climate change, but world hunger, and ecological devastation too.*
These new and delicious meat alternatives may be a way ‘in’ for those who want to reduce their negative impact yet find it hard to give up meat consumption.
