Reflecting back on the 60 books I read in 2019 I tried to decide on my top ten favourites. It was tough, but here they are, in no particular order. Continue reading
Candle Season (or how to spread kindness)
As we light candles to add a soft glow to our homes during these long, dark nights of winter, let’s think of the flame as a way of spreading kindness.
“Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.” (Buddha)
“So spread your light through love and kindness to the people around you and let the ‘giving spirit’ you initiate spread like a virus, infinitely touching the lives of people you may never meet, across boundaries you may never cross, in ways you may never have thought possible. That is the power of our love and kindness, and it’s your ticket to making the world a happier place.” (author unknown)
I remember the day a total stranger pulled over to the side of a busy and narrow highway to help me change a flat tire. It was dangerous work with huge trucks barreling past, threatening to drag us along in their undertow. I asked for the stranger’s name, wanted to buy him lunch, something, but he simply asked me to do a good deed for someone else. I was touched by his kindness. I do try to practise kindness in my life, but need to make a greater effort to practise random acts of kindness for strangers each and every day. It may not be a something big, like changing a tire, some days it may only be a sincere compliment, but who knows where it may lead? Hopefully the gesture will ‘spread like a virus.’
It’s the end of the line…
The End of the Line General Store in Lynn Valley, North Vancouver, is a local gem. It’s very popular with hungry hikers and mountain bikers. After exploring the adjacent trails they can treat themselves to hot and cold drinks, snacks, casual lunches and ice-cream. But it’s so much more than that! It’s also a treasure trove of local art (for purchase) old-style toys (the kind that don’t require batteries), penny candy (I think they might be 7 pennies now), corner store type groceries, an array of novelty items and, best of all, books by local authors! And now they’re also carrying The Grizzlies of Grouse Mountain by yours truly (with Rae Schidlo and Linda Sharp). Continue reading
Go get ’em girl.
The best thing about Greta Thunberg is that she has shown us that one person – and a 16-year-old at that – can have an impact. Teenagers around the world now see that they are not powerless. If a young girl like Greta can be heard, so can they. Continue reading
Election hiccup: ousted candidate still manages to take 3rd place
In my electoral riding a candidate who had been dismissed from the party just prior to the election still received 8,500+ votes, putting her in 3rd place, ahead of the Green candidate. Continue reading
Write What You Know? Maybe not…
I’m often asked if I have a favourite author and the answer always changes depending on what books I’ve recently read. If asked today I’d say it was John Boyne. The three titles of his that I’ve read (The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, The Heart’s Invisible Furies, My Brother’s Name is Jessica) are each completely different, yet so brilliant in their own way. He has a talent for creating humour out of desperately difficult circumstances but without making light of that situation. Continue reading
Favourite Reads of this Summer
Do teachers really ask their students to write papers on this subject? To me a much more interesting piece would be “What I read on my summer vacation.” Continue reading

Beyond Meat’s Vegan sausages
I’ve maintained a plant-based diet for close to 30 years but occasionally I long for some of that comfort food I remember from my youth. Bangers and mash is one such meal. Continue reading
